Well, That's a Good Way To Piss Off Korean Gamers [Update]

Anime, gaming, and cosplay event Japan Expo is underway in Paris. And since Riot Games is in attendance, the studio created a notice on the League of Legends website. The image accompanying the announcement has some Korean gamers up in arms. Over on the League of Legends forum, member Twking pointed out that the character Ahri wears a traditional Korean costume called the hanbok and debuted with the game’s server launched in South Korea. Thus, the character has a strong connection with Korea. What’s the rub? On the League of Legends Korean website, Riot Korea community rep RiotRuneterra responded to the concerns. [He’s referring to the Ahri image.] We have requested our France rep to change the image, and it was done quickly. The announcement was regarding Riot EU team participating in the upcoming Japan Expo. Japan Expo is a sort of comic convention in France. It is similar to Seoul/Busan Comic conventions. meant to use a popular Asian champion to promote the event. This wasn’t done on purpose. However, using Ahri, which is a champion representative of Korea to promote Japan Expo was not appropriate. The France rep realized this and extends his sincere apology to the Korean summoners. I also sincerely apologize again to everyone at this late hour. Riot did change the webpage’s character to another character: Japanese-influenced champion Yasuo. This isn’t just about getting upset about a Korean character appearing with rising sun u31 ทางเข้า imagery in the established Japan Expo logo, but also,

the use of an obviously Korean influenced character for an event called “Japan Expo.” Why give characters culturally infused identities if those aren’t respected?
